Start by Making a Checklist
The first call to action as soon as you find out about your move should to be to make sure you have a checklist in order of your inventory, and tasks that need to be accomplished at a minimum to make the process a success. This isn’t an extensive checklist but a general first step on helping you to stay on track with the priorities of the move. For example, it could mention tasks such as:
- Empty the fridge
- Label all the boxes
- Set aside clothing for the last days of move
- Get rid of unwanted materials
- Donate unused clothes
These are just examples as everyone’s priorities may look a little different based on the situation. But it goes without saying that having a checklist will help you stay on track and for when you get frazzled you’ll have the checklist as a guide to get back to the important stuff.
Gather your packing supplies
The next best thing you can do for a short notice move, is to gather as many packing materials as you can. These materials are things like boxes, tape and shrink wrap if you have it. If not don’t stress yourself looking for them if you have items that can serve same the purpose well enough. Many times people keep the boxes to appliances or you may have some spare totes around. The key here is to prioritize packing the items that need to be packed and getting organized as quickly as possible. Once again, your local moving company is prepared for situations like this so it is important to already have your moving company selected and ready to move in at a moments notice. Not only will they know how to help get your inventory organized but that they will have a surplus of the materials that you need. But the key here is by knowing the steps and the order to get the job done it will save you time and frustration.
Pack One Room at a Time
This is one that most people miss. Although, you could potentially get away with packing random areas of your home in a sporadic manner when you have lots of time to waste, on a short notice move you won’t be afforded that luxury. Resist the urge to jump around to any other areas of your residence until the room you’re in is completed and packed. This will keep you from getting overwhelmed or confused during the process, which is easy to do when you’re running back and forth trying figure out what’s most important. Of course there are immediate situations that may pull you away from the current working room you’re in, but as a general rule of thumb, you want to knock out your tasks in a sequential manner. Packing one room at a time will keep you in sequence and on track to get the job done on time. It also would help to label the sides of the boxes from each room and the type of items contained in them to help with quick loading and offloading tasks between locations. Once again we’re dealing with a short notice move, so you won’t have much time for in depth planning. But when keeping theses tips in mind you can stay ahead of your moving date deadline.

We always like to say that why stress by yourself when you can stress together with other people. Just kidding there, but needless to say, there should never be a time when you are too bogged down to ask for some help. Whether it be from a close friend, family member, neighbor or of course your friendly and reputable local moving company, having someone with you gives you relief and obviously manpower to deal with the moving task of a short notice moving job.
